In the heart of Dolores Hidalgo, cradle of National Independence, history is not only remembered... it is sung. This Magical Town was filled with music, memories and voices that sang from the soul to celebrate the centennial of the birth of one of its most universal sons: José Alfredo Jiménez.
More than a commemoration, it was a collective celebration that brought together visitors from different states of the Republic and abroad, all united by the songs that have accompanied generations of love, heartbreak and celebrations.
A tribute that began at home 🏡
The tour began at the José Alfredo Jiménez House Museum, a space where his history, his lyrics and his essence remain alive among guitars, photographs, personal objects and memories that take us back to another era.
There, amidst applause and mariachi, the attendees recalled the life of the composer who, without formal musical studies and composing “de silbidito”, managed to write more than 400 songs and record more than 30 albums.
From Dolores Hidalgo to Mexico City
José Alfredo was born on January 19, 1926 in Dolores Hidalgo. Since he was a child he showed his creativity: he parodied songs, wrote verses and dreamed of life as a charro.
In 1936, after the death of his father, he moved to Mexico City, where he began working as a waiter at La Sirena restaurant in San Cosme. But his destiny was on the stage.
In 1948 he sang for the first time on XEX and later on XEW, accompanied by the trio Los Rebeldes. His career took off with the song “Yo”, recorded in 1950 by Andrés Huesca y sus Costeños for RCA Victor, considered his first big hit.
The writer Carlos Monsiváis described him as a composer who turned popular sentiment into a collective hymn. And so it was: his music took Mexican folklore to the whole world.
Mañanitas to the King 👑
At midnight, the celebration moved to the Mausoleum of José Alfredo Jiménez, located in the Municipal Cemetery.
In a festive and deeply emotional atmosphere, just at 12:30 a.m., Las Mañanitas were sung to mark the 100th anniversary of the composer's birth. The scene was unique: people from
Colombia, Tamaulipas, Mexico City, San Miguel de Allende and many other places singing in unison.
It was not just a tribute, it was a reaffirmation that his legacy lives on.
