Santiago Maravatío, whose name comes from the Purépecha language Maruati-tío, means “Place where the precious is kept”. This corner of Guanajuato honors its name with breathtaking landscapes, living history in every street and a human warmth that makes every visitor feel at home.
Of Purepecha and Nahuatl ancestry, this territory was the passage of Tangaxoan II, king of the Michoacan empire, who on his way to the Camembaro Valley saw how Purepecha, Chichimeca and Otomi families settled around the ancient Yácatas. Legend has it that the chief Curuxan and his daughter Yorahue, upon contemplating from the heights of the Mesa Chica the springs of crystalline and thermal waters, exclaimed in amazement: “Oh, beautiful place! Thus Maravatío was born.
In 1539, Fray Alfonso de Alvarado asked Viceroy Antonio de Mendoza to found a new town, bringing Spanish families to live together in Christianity with the original inhabitants. A year later, on January 29, 1540, Charles V issued the royal charter of foundation, consecrating July 25 as the patronal feast day in honor of Santiago Apostle, Lord of Thunder, a tradition that endures with fervor to this day.
Today, Santiago Maravatío invites you to rediscover its heritage and nature. Among mountains, dams and hot springs, ecotourism lovers will find a haven of peace and adventure. Its chapel in the municipal seat and the religious center “El Cerrito” are witnesses of the devotion and history that give identity to the municipality.
Santiago Maravatío is not only a destination, it is a journey to the heart of the precious - a place where history, faith and nature meet to remind us of the beauty of the authentic.
