Three creepy tours in Guanajuato that you won't forget

1. Aunt Aura's House

Located in a real old mansion in the city, La Casa de la Tía Aura offers you a tour unlike any other. Here there are no actors or dramatizations, but rooms full of secrets that seem to awaken with your presence.

Each room is set with light, sound and movement effects that recreate stories of past times: from scenes of the Viceroyalty's daily life, to darker episodes linked to the Holy Inquisition. As you walk through the corridors, you will see representations of punishments and methods of torture used in those times, including the grisly walling up, where bodies were buried in the walls.

The setting, coupled with the narrative that accompanies the tour, provokes an eerie feeling of witnessing something more than a simple exhibition... as if those stories still lived in the walls of the house.

2. The Ex Hacienda del Cochero (Museum of the Inquisition)

Under the peaceful gardens of Guanajuato hides one of the most macabre museums in the city: The Ex Hacienda del Cochero, also known as the Museum of the Holy Inquisition or Las Galeras de la Inquisición.

Although it was built as a mining hacienda in 1692 by order of the Marquis of Rayas, history took a terrifying turn in the mid-18th century. In 1764, it became a dungeon for the Tribunal of the Holy Office, used to punish heretics, blasphemers and witches under the rigid ecclesiastical rule of New Spain.

It is said that Fernando de Miera, one of the most feared inquisitors of the time, used this site to apply methods of torture that today are chilling: the iron rack, the distaff, the iron lady, the nailed chair, the chastity belt, and even a guillotine. Even today, in the subway tunnels of the museum, human remains can still be seen that bear witness to the horror experienced within these walls.

The atmosphere of the place is cold, somber and steeped in history. It is not hard to imagine the screams and wails that once echoed beneath those stone vaults. Although its period as a torture center was short, its legacy is profound and disturbing.

3. The House of Wailing

Few legends in Guanajuato are as intense as the one that inhabits La Casa de los Lamentos, located on the road to Dolores Hidalgo, km 4, in Valenciana. This 18th century building was first a post office and then acquired by a wealthy mining engineer named Don Tadeo Fulgencio, who sought to adapt it as a home for his fiancée: Doña María Constanza de la Rivera Olmedo.

But fate had other plans. Constanza was murdered during a failed robbery, and Don Tadeo, devastated by grief, lost his mind. Desperate to see her again, he turned to a witch who taught him dark rituals of black magic. Thus began a spiral of obsession and madness that led to human sacrifices.

Human remains and books of sorcery were found in the house, which seem to confirm that Don Tadeo's rituals were more than superstitions. Today, in every corner of the house, there is a dense, almost supernatural air. Visitors can learn about the pastimes, obsessions and tragedies of this tormented character, in a journey that mixes history and legend.
