It was officially inaugurated on December 16, 1988, and in 2022, it was named the Salvador Almaraz Museum in honor of the distinguished local muralist.

The Origins“ Mural: A Reflection of Our History

La composición simétrica del mural evoca conceptos de religiosidad, grandiosidad, lujo y fuerza. Su parte superior, que se expande hacia el infinito, sugiere glorificación y libertad. La temática se centra en el encuentro de culturas tras la llegada de los conquistadores españoles en 1547. Representa un lago antiguo, simbolizando el origen autóctono de nuestras raíces, enmarcado por una flora exuberante.
En el centro, la rosa de los vientos, inspirada en el cerro de Bernalejo, marca el punto de localización de la antigua Hoya, mientras que corazones rojos simbolizan el amor hacia quienes llegan a esta tierra. El mural también aborda el mestizaje a través de tres rostros: el indígena, el hispano y el mestizo, reflejando las huellas de la lucha por la libertad.
En los extremos, un indígena muestra su morada y un bastón sagrado que fertiliza la tierra, mientras que una mujer indígena con caña de maíz representa la agricultura y el culto a la fertilidad. Detrás de ellos, chozas y un horizonte lacustre sugieren la vida cotidiana de los ancestros.
A la derecha, el conquistador español y un fraile con la cruz simbolizan la llegada de la nueva religión y la conquista, mientras que en la parte superior, los capitanes de la conquista celebran su triunfo. El mural culmina con un hombre joven que, en actitud ascendente, representa la lucha y el futuro de la juventud de Irapuato.
Este mural no solo es una obra de arte, sino un testimonio de la historia y la identidad cultural que une a las generaciones pasadas con las futuras.

The Mural of the Revolutions: An Artistic Legacy in Irapuato

Since his childhood, Almaraz dreamed of painting the intrados of the vault of the staircase of the Municipal Palace. In 1967, upon learning that the authorities were planning to commission the mural to José Chávez Morado, he decided to approach the then municipal president, Dr. Ramón Hernández Granados. With determination, he exclaimed: “This work has to be done by an Irapuatense, and that's me!”. Although initially unknown to the mayor, his passion and talent soon led him to obtain the necessary support to materialize his vision.
Almaraz established three essential conditions: total creative freedom, access to appropriate materials and the provision of resources for his work team. The mayor, recognizing the importance of artistic freedom, readily agreed.
The result was an impressive work covering 540 square meters, executed in a mixed technique of acrylic paints on cement and stucco. The mural captures key moments in Mexico's history: the Conquest, the Evangelization, the Struggle for Independence, the Reform War and the Revolution.
Throughout his career, Almaraz has been recognized with multiple awards, including the “Diego Rivera” State Arts Award in 1998 and the “Vazco de Plata” in 2004. His legacy lives on not only in Irapuato, but in the hearts of all those who admire his talent and dedication. The Mural of the Revolutions is a testimony of his love for his land and his desire for future generations to appreciate his art.

This work of art was installed during the remodeling of the plaza in 1984 and has been a meeting point for locals and visitors ever since.
The fountain, created by the sculptor Luis Aragón, is composed of three pieces. The most outstanding, located in the center of the plaza, is nine meters high, four meters thick and weighs more than twenty tons. Its design, with curves and hollows, represents the fusion of cultures and modern Irapuato.
In addition, the other two sculptures flank the Temple of Our Lady of Solitude, symbolizing the dual identity of the region: one representing the American culture and the other the European.
