On the night of February 28th, Guanajuato Capital transformed into a sports and tourism destination: hundreds of runners from across the country gathered to experience the BUFF® Urban Race 2026, a nighttime race that combined high performance, urban scenery, and the hospitality that distinguishes the state of Guanajuato.

A challenging and enchanting journey

The circuit designed for the test took participants through tunnels, alleys, stairs, and ramps in the Historic Center, offering not only physical challenge but also visual rewards: the illuminated city, colonial facades, and viewpoints that present unique postcards. The competition featured two modes—the 8 km Sprint Non Flat and the 13 km Full Non Flat—technical routes that accumulated 438 meters of positive elevation gain in the short distance and 767 meters in the long one, demanding pace, concentration, and strategy from amateur and elite runners alike.

National participation and experience

Athletes from cities like Morelia, Salamanca, San Felipe, and Guanajuato itself, as well as other points in the country, highlighted the dual experience the race offers: the athletic challenge and the opportunity to see the World Heritage city in a different light. In the weeks prior, over a hundred runners completed reconnaissance runs along the course, refining their tactics and familiarizing themselves with the most technical sections of the itinerary.

A weekend for the whole family

The agenda included activities designed for all ages: on February 27th and 28th, BUFF® KIDS 2026 took place, with free registration through the donation of toys for local communities. In the afternoon, families and the public gathered at the Juárez Theater for a program of activities that preceded the evening race, consolidating the event as a community and family experience.

Security and logistics: priority for runners and visitors

The organization placed safety at the core of its efforts: the event included ambulances and an additional medical unit, SIMUB Volunteer Fire Department operations, and the support of state and municipal Civil Protection. Supply points with water and electrolytes were set up along the route; logistics encouraged the use of personal hydration systems and headlamps for sections with reduced lighting, along with recommendations on footwear and visibility. These measures, along with clear signage and protocols, reinforced Guanajuato's image as a prepared and safe destination for sports tourism.

Services that facilitate the visit

For the convenience of attendees, several city hotels offered special rates during the event, making it easier for runners and their companions to stay. Participation kits were handed out at local points such as Puk Travel, which encouraged interaction with city businesses and services. At the closing, the streets were filled with applause, raffles, and an awards ceremony that crowned the day and brought the festive celebration to a close at the Plazuela del Truco.

Sports tourism

Beyond the competition, the BUFF® Urban Race made clear the potential of sports tourism to open new ways of experiencing Guanajuato: by combining physical effort with a heritage tour, the event motivated participants to extend their stay, visit museums, try the local gastronomic offerings, and explore panoramic viewpoints that only night can reveal. The organizers later published results and audiovisual material on specialized platforms, allowing the experience to reach national and international audiences.

A call to run again and discover

Testimonies gathered from runners underscored a common message: Guanajuato is a destination that invites you to practice sports while peacefully enjoying its cultural richness. With logistics designed to protect athletes and spectators, and with the city showcasing its nocturnal charm, the BUFF® Urban Race 2026 demonstrated how sports can drive safe tourism and create memorable experiences.
