A Must-See: The Sanctuary of Jesus Nazareno

The heart of Atotonilco is the impressive Sanctuary of Jesús Nazareno de Atotonilco, also known as the Sanctuary of Atotonilco.

Built between 1746 and 1748, this sanctuary is considered one of the greatest expressions of New Hispanic popular Baroque. Its interior is covered in hand-painted murals, full of color and symbolism. It is believed that a large part of these works were created by the painter Miguel Antonio Martínez de Pocasangre.

Every corner conveys history, faith, and tradition. To access some of the most impressive areas of the complex, a small contribution is requested.

It is no coincidence that July 8, 2008, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which highlighted that:

“Its architecture and decoration bear witness to the influence of the doctrine of St. Ignatius of Loyola.

Furthermore, the sanctuary holds deep historical value: in 1810, Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla took a painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe from this site, which he used as a banner when he initiated the War of Independence.

A vibrant place of faith and tradition

Throughout the year, the sanctuary receives pilgrimages and spiritual retreats. During Holy Week, activity increases considerably with celebrations, fasts, and acts of deep devotion.

Four to five times a year, the cloister comes alive with spiritual retreats that keep the original essence of the place alive.

The perfect spot for photos 📸

Beyond its historical and religious importance, Atotonilco is an incredibly photogenic place.
