Jesús Nazareno Atotonilco Sanctuary

The Sanctuary of Jesus Nazareno de Atotonilco is a baroque temple of the eighteenth century located 14 kilometers from San Miguel in the Mexican state of Guanajuato. It was founded by Father Luis Felipe Neri de Alfaro in 1740, who was inspired for its construction by the Holy Sepulcher located in Jerusalem. This Sanctuary dedicated to Jesus Nazarene, served as a house of Spiritual Exercises of San Ignacio de Loyola. The Sanctuary of Atotonilco is known worldwide for having participated in the history of the Independence of Mexico, when the Priest Miguel Hidalgo, took a banner with the image of the Virgin of Guadalupe as flag of the insurgent army.
