This image was donated by King Charles I and his son Philip II to the town of Guanajuato as a form of recognition for its mining prosperity on August 8, 1557. The image is a wooden sculpture of the Virgin and Child, with an embossed silver base.
The sanctuary has three entrances, a bell tower of three bodies and another tower of churrigueresque style. Part of the church is dedicated to the patron saint of miners, San Nicolás Tolentino.
