Guanajuato Capital transformed on the night of February 28th into a high-demand circuit where hundreds of runners mixed sport and tourism in the BUFF Urban Race 2026. The race, which traversed tunnels, alleys, stairways, and ramps of the Historic Center, offered a sporting spectacle that also highlighted the city's night view and architecture.
Runners from all over Mexico
The competition brought together participants from different cities—Morelia, Salamanca, San Felipe, Guanajuato itself, and other parts of the country—who highlighted the value of combining training with the opportunity to discover a World Heritage city. Many runners celebrated the “double experience”: the physical challenge of the race and the visual reward of seeing the city illuminated from high vantage points.
Two distances, one challenge
The BUFF Urban Race offered two formats: the 8 km Sprint Non Flat (orange bibs) and the 13 km Full Non Flat (green bibs). The course was not easy: the 13 km had a cumulative elevation gain of 767 meters and the 8 km had 438 meters, with technical sections that forced competitors to pace themselves and maintain concentration on descents with irregular steps.
Before race night, the organizers distributed kits at Puk Travel (Luis González Obregón #10) and opened registration for the children’s race in exchange for toy donations. The family event included a series of activities at the Juárez Theater at 3:00 p.m. and a children’s fun run at 4:00 p.m., serving as a prelude to the competitive evening event.
Security and logistics designed for the visitor
One of the organization's priorities was to ensure the safety of athletes and spectators. Three ambulances and an additional medical unit were deployed at strategic points, with support from SIMUB Volunteer Firefighters and state and municipal Civil Protection. Supply points offered water and electrolytes. There were no cups on the route, so runners were asked to bring their own hydration systems. Additionally, the organization recommended the use of headlamps for dimly lit sections and footwear with good cushioning.
Safety regulations included mandatory bib visibility and a ban on running with animals, as well as instructions to yield to faster runners and exercise extreme caution on descents. For those who completed the Full Non Flat, the course involved two laps (8 km + 5 km) with the final finish line at the Plazuela del Truco, going up the San Diego ramp.
Atmosphere and closing of the night
The activity concluded with raffles scheduled for 9:30 PM and the awards ceremony at 10:00 PM in the finish line area. Participants highlighted the festive atmosphere and the encouragement from people in the streets, as well as the opportunity to experience Guanajuato at night from a different perspective.
A message for those who still doubt
The testimonials gathered from the runners sent a clear message: Guanajuato is a destination worth visiting to practice sports and, at the same time, enjoy its heritage with peace of mind. The organization of the event and the presence of emergency services reinforced the perception of a safe destination, well-prepared to receive sports tourism.
