Presa del Juguete: adventure, history and nature in Jerécuaro
Nestled in the southeast of the state of Guanajuato, the Presa del Juguete—also known as Las Adjuntas—is one of the most attractive destinations in the municipality of Jerécuaro.
This impressive reservoir, construction of which began in 1925 on the initiative of friars Ángel Juárez and José Pérez, was inaugurated on November 27, 1963, with the purpose of benefiting agricultural producers and residents of the area.
Nowadays, the dam not only retains its historical value but has also become an ideal place to enjoy nature and adventure tourism. One of its main attractions is its wooden suspension bridge, which rises more than 30 meters above the ground and offers spectacular views of the landscape. A few steps away, a 40-meter canyon invites the most daring to practice rappelling and rock climbing.
For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, the place has palapas and a gazebo where you can share a family meal, enjoy good music, and contemplate the majestic waterfall from the main spillway. The view from any point is simply unforgettable.
A cement stairway allows access down to the river, where visitors can explore an area populated by sabino cypresses, oaks, and rock formations. This is a perfect space for peaceful walks, photo shoots, or even recreational fishing.
The name of the dam comes from its location in the vicinity of the community of El Juguete, an area that has given identity and warmth to this site since its beginnings. In addition to its natural beauty, the place preserves the memory of a community project that transformed the region more than half a century ago.
To get here, if you're coming from Celaya, you can take the highway towards Querétaro and then turn off at Apaseo el Alto towards Jerécuaro, or you can come via Salvatierra and continue towards Acámbaro. Once in Jerécuaro, take the highway to Coroneo and, eight kilometers later, turn off towards the community of El Juguete. From there, a two-kilometer dirt road will lead you directly to this natural gem in southern Guanajuato.
