Plazuelas Archaeological Zone: an encounter with the past in Pénjamo
Located in the southern foothills of the Pénjamo mountain range, southwest of the Sierra de Guanajuato, the Plazuelas Archaeological Zone is one of the most important cultural treasures of the state.
This site houses the remains of an ancient pre-Hispanic city, considered one of the most complex in the region for its careful planning and harmonious integration with the natural environment.
Plazuelas was inhabited between 450 and 900 A.D., during the period of greatest population density in the current territory of Guanajuato. The most remarkable thing about the site is how its buildings were constructed respecting the order of the landscape, establishing a direct connection with the surrounding hills. To walk along its paths is to enter into the living history of the cultures that inhabited this area of the Bajío.
The visit begins at the Visitors' Assistance Center (CAV's), which is reached by following Federal Highway No. 90, Pénjamo-La Piedad section. After 12.5 kilometers, take a detour to the right, then travel a little more than 2 kilometers to San Juan el Alto Plazuelas, and finally 700 meters of cobblestone road. The access is also properly signposted from La Piedad, Michoacán, facilitating the arrival from different points.
The general admission fee is $39 pesos and for children under 12 years old it is $12 pesos. The tour is outdoors, so it is recommended to wear comfortable clothes and shoes, a hat or cap, sunscreen and enough water. As this is a federal conservation zone, no food, large backpacks, alcoholic beverages or walking outside the marked trails is allowed.
