Sacred Heart Parish: history and faith in Apaseo el Alto

Sacred Heart Parish is a living testimony to more than a century of faith and community effort.

In the heart of Apaseo el Alto is one of the most emblematic temples of the municipality: La Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón, a precinct that holds more than a century of history, tradition and spirituality. Located at Jardín Cuauhtémoc No. 153, Zona Centro, this church is today a meeting point for the community and a living testimony of the town's religious past.

Its construction dates back to 1833, when work began on the first Catholic church in the town, a significant fact since no church of such magnitude had been built since the arrival of the Spaniards in 1529. However, the project was interrupted due to lack of resources and an outbreak of cholera morbus, which seriously affected the population.

The work was resumed in 1850, thanks to the initiative of Presbyter Pablo Sánchez, and although masses began to be celebrated since 1867 under the guidance of Fray Román de San Antonio, the construction was not completed until 1872, under the leadership of Presbyter José de Jesús Narváez Franco. He was the one who built the tower, placed the first clay floor and also installed the first public clock of the municipality.

Contrary to popular belief, the design of the temple was not the work of architect Francisco Eduardo Tresguerras, but of master builder Juan García, known as El Mulato, whose participation has been historically confirmed. This fact enriches the local identity, vindicating the regional talent that gave shape to one of its most beloved buildings.

Today, the bells of the temple continue to call to mass from the bell tower, and a brief melody marks each hour, like a sonorous echo of the legacy that this church represents. Its presence in the daily life of Apaseo el Alto goes beyond the religious: it is part of the landscape, of the collective memory and of the soul of the people.

To visit the Parroquia del Sagrado Corazón is to immerse yourself in the living history of Apaseo el Alto. Whether for devotion, architectural interest or desire to learn more about the cultural roots of the region, this temple invites you to stop, look up and feel the pulse of time that still resonates within its walls.
