Santiago Apostle Parish
The Parish of Santiago Apostle, located in the heart of Valle de Bravo, stands out not only for its history, but also for its magnificent main entrance, facing west. This architectural work, built in quarry stone, is composed of three bodies divided into streets, each with an iconographic design that invites visitors to explore its rich symbolism and artistic details.
In the first body, the access door is topped with a dodecagon arch and presents a figure known as “angelote”, which reflects the influence of the indigenous workmanship. Just on the border of the first two bodies, there is a niche that houses the representation of St. Joseph, who holds the child in his arms and a lily in his right hand, symbolizing purity and paternity.
The second body is equally fascinating, with a slight cushioning in the central street that houses an octagonal rose window. The plywood columns, in this case with spiral fluting, add a distinctive touch to the structure. The side niches are hexagonal, and the story goes that a sculpture on the right side was mutilated by an accident, adding a tinge of history to this magnificent place.
The third body presents the papal coat of arms, accompanied by a cross with three crosspieces and one of the keys of heaven, which denotes the hierarchy within the Catholic Church. It is interesting to note that this shield is not centered on the vertical axis of symmetry, which gives it a unique character. Above all, a Caravaca cross, a symbol associated with the Lord Santiago, tops the structure, with Solomonic columns decorated with floral motifs that contrast with the more classical style of the other parts.
The Parish of Santiago Apostle is not only a delight for the eyes, but also a testimony of the rich religious and cultural history of Valle de Bravo. A visit to this church will allow you to appreciate the fusion of art and spirituality that characterizes the region, making your tour an unforgettable experience. Don't miss it on your next visit!
