Monuments to the memory of Don Miguel Hidalgo in the Historic Center of Abasolo
In the heart of the Historic Center of Abasolo, Guanajuato, stand two significant monuments dedicated to Don Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the Father of the Nation. These monuments not only pay homage to his legacy, but also bear witness to the history that has forged Mexico.
Sculpture of Don Miguel Hidalgo
The first of these monuments is an impressive full body sculpture of Don Miguel Hidalgo, made by the talented sculptor Abraham Gonzalez M., commissioned by Mr. J. Jesus Guisa Garcia. This sculpture was placed in the Plaza Constitución in December 1960. Originally, the monument was located in front of Lerdo Street, but over the years it has changed location. Later, it was moved to the front of the Parish of Nuestra Santísima Madre de la Luz and, after the remodeling of the Plaza Constitución, it was reinstalled again in front of Lerdo Street, where it is located today.
Freedom Stele
The second monument, known as the Estela de la Libertad, is one of 262 Eagle Heads that exist in the country, marking important points in Hidalgo's Route that began the Fight for Independence from 1810 to 1811. The reason why this emblematic monument is located in Abasolo is because the Father of the Nation was baptized here. In commemoration of the Bicentennial of Independence, the Government of the State of Guanajuato decided to place this iconic Eagle's Head in Constitution Square, reinforcing the historical link of this place with the struggle for freedom.
A historical legacy
These monuments are not only a point of tourist interest, but also narrate an essential part of the history of Abasolo and Mexico. They represent the birth and baptism of the most illustrious man from Guanajuato, who, thanks to his education and character, initiated in 1810 the most transcendental struggle of our people: the fight for independence.
Visiting these monuments is a unique opportunity to connect with the history and legacy of Don Miguel Hidalgo, a tour that will allow you to appreciate the importance of Abasolo in the context of Mexico's independence. Be sure to visit these emblematic symbols of freedom and patriotism on your next visit!
