Ex Hacienda de San Clemente: vestiges of a majestic past in Romita
Amidst the rural landscapes of Romita, Guanajuato, still stand the silent remains of what was once one of the most important haciendas in the region: the Hacienda de San Clemente.
Although today its ruined walls can barely tell the story, its grandeur can still be breathed among the rubble, the worn arches and the stones covered by time.
According to records of the 1900 Census, there were eleven active haciendas in Romita at that time. Of these, San Clemente was the second largest, with 679 inhabitants, second only to Mezquite Gordo. In its time of splendor, this hacienda not only represented a center of agricultural production, but also a nucleus of social and economic life for the area.
Like many others in Mexico, San Clemente was intervened following the expropriation laws implemented during the first six-year presidential term in the country's history, under the government of General Lázaro Cárdenas. The agrarian reform, initiated in 1935, marked the beginning of the transformation -and subsequent decline- of many Mexican haciendas.
Little by little, the big houses, barns, waterwheels and bridges were stripped of their function and were left to the mercy of time and abandonment. Today, the hulks of the Ex Hacienda de San Clemente preserve only fragments of their ancient architecture, but still manage to transmit the strength of a bygone era.
Visiting this site is more than an act of tourism; it is an opportunity to reflect on the agrarian history of the country, on the profound changes that marked the course of entire communities and on the rich heritage that still stands the test of time.
If you are interested in history, ancient architecture and memory-filled landscapes, be sure to include San Clemente in your tour of Romita. The ruins may be weathered, but its spirit remains intact.
