Explore the Main Garden of Valle de Santiago: a corner of history and beauty.

The Main Garden of Valle de Santiago is an emblematic place that invites visitors to enjoy its beauty and immerse themselves in the rich history of the region.

Its layout dates back to the founding of Valle de Santiago in 1607, but the present structure, designed as a zocalo, was established in 1868. Originally known as Plaza de Armas, its name was changed to Jardín Independencia on September 15, 1910, in commemoration of the centennial of Mexico's independence.

Since 1869, this garden has been a meeting point for Vallenses, who gathered here after returning from the war against the French Intervention. The original kiosk began to be built on December 8, 1900 and has been modified several times. In June 1951, during the municipal government of Albino Tavera Amezcua, the kiosk acquired the form we know today, thanks to the collaboration of the Governor of the state, Lic. José Aguilar y Maya.

A significant change occurred in 1987, when the perimeter of the garden became a pedestrian space, facilitating access to visitors. This project, carried out under the government of Manuel Granados Enríquez, involved the laying of cobblestones made of white cement and quarry dust brought from Querétaro, which further embellished the surroundings.

The Main Garden is surrounded by three portals that give it a special character: Portal Morelos, Portal Hidalgo and Portal Centenario, the latter built to commemorate the first centennial of Independence and formerly known as Portal Chiquito. In addition, there is the Portal Guerrero, which is located next to the Parish of Santiago Apostle on Melchor Ocampo Street.

Visiting the Main Garden of Valle de Santiago is an experience that combines history, culture and a pleasant atmosphere, perfect for enjoying a walk, relaxing in its green areas or simply contemplating the daily life of this charming municipality. Don't miss the opportunity to visit this beautiful corner of Guanajuato!
