Discover Salamanca's Old Parish: A Baroque Treasure in the Heart of Guanajuato

Located in front of the emblematic Plaza de los Niños Héroes, the Parroquia Antigua de Salamanca stands out not only for its imposing size, but also for its exceptional acoustics, which make it one of the most unique churches in the region. Founded on August 24, 1603, the day on which Saint Bartholomew the Apostle is commemorated, this temple was originally named in honor of the saint.

The Churrigueresque façade of the Parroquia Antigua, built in 1740, is a magnificent example of the Stygian and Solomonic Baroque style. Its ornate decoration attracts visitors and architecture lovers, being one of the most interesting features that Salamanca has to offer. The design of the facade stands out for its complexity and detail, making it a focal point for those exploring the city.

One of the most intriguing elements of the parish is its baroque tower, which stands incomplete with only one body. This tower has a double semicircular arch on all four sides, and its truncation has given rise to various versions of the reasons for its unfinishing. Some theories suggest that lack of budget prevented its completion, while others suggest that the weight of the structure may have compromised the stability of the building.

The parish atrium, built in 1838 by Friar Victoriano Rodríguez, welcomes visitors with its elegant design. In addition, the temple has a one-level side doorway, accessible through a semicircular arch, and its walls are reinforced with buttresses on the outside, ensuring its resistance over the years.

Upon entering, visitors are greeted by a beautiful mesquite wood floor, typical of the Guanajuato region. Inside, the main altar is adorned with an impressive painting of the Virgin of Guadalupe, while to the left is a small chapel dedicated to the Holy Family, known as “El Camarín”, which houses three sculptures representing Mary, Joseph and the Child Jesus.

The Parroquia Antigua de Salamanca is not only a place of worship, but also a living testimony of the history and culture of the region. Its architectural beauty and rich heritage make this temple an obligatory stop for those who visit Salamanca and wish to immerse themselves in its historical heritage.
