Discover the House of the Dogs in Apaseo el Grande

If you are planning a visit to Apaseo el Grande, you can't miss exploring the emblematic Casa de los Perros, a true architectural treasure dating from the 18th century.

This impressive building is recognized as one of the finest civil works of its time in Mexico and is an outstanding example of the Churrigueresque style, which combines elaborate details with a rich history.

La Casa de los Perros, originally known as El Palacio de Herrera, was built between 1780 and 1789 for Don Francisco Antonio Fernández de Herrera. Its current name comes from the two sculptures of dogs guarding the main door, a detail that makes it even more unique and attractive to visitors. The Encyclopedia of Mexico describes it as an architectural jewel, highlighting its lobed arch columns and fine stone ornaments, made by the master craftsman known as Cornelio.

Although the interior of the house has no murals, it still preserves part of the baroque-style wallpaper, which gives it a special charm. For years, the house was used as a garlic warehouse, but its architectural and cultural value makes it an essential place for those who want to learn more about the history of Apaseo el Grande.

Today, the Casa de los Perros is one of the main tourist attractions of the city. Its one-story façade has pilasters with niches in the corners, where the emblem of the House of Austria is located: a double-headed eagle. In addition, its esplanade has benches to rest and a column in honor of Miguel Hidalgo, which creates a perfect environment to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

Visiting the Casa de los Perros is not only an opportunity to admire a masterpiece of colonial architecture, but also to immerse yourself in the rich history of Apaseo el Grande. So don't forget to include this jewel in your itinerary and enjoy the beauty and cultural legacy that this place has to offer, we are waiting for you in Apaseo el Grande!
