Description:
Celebrated on the second Sunday of November, this festivity is a tribute to the Señor del Socorro, a central figure in the community, and a reflection of the rich cultural heritage of the region.
A Little History
The neighborhood of San Juan has deep roots that date back to the arrival of its first settler, Juan Miguel, an Otomi Indian. Over time, this place became a nucleus of tradition and faith, and the feast that is celebrated today goes back practically to the beginnings of the community, around 1660. The story of the Señor del Socorro, who is said to have been found in a tree by the neighbors, is intertwined with the agricultural practices of the area, turning the festivity into a thanksgiving for the harvests and a plea for good weather.
Preparations for the Party
The celebration begins with the decoration of Ignacio Rodríguez Street, where ornate arches are installed on each corner, adorned with a Christ in the center and surrounded by fruits, vegetables and flowers typical of the region. The façade of the temple is adorned with garlands of tejocotes and pumpkins, while the main altarpiece receives a special treatment, making it even more resplendent.
The alborada, which starts around five in the morning, marks the beginning of the festivities. During this morning celebration, local wind bands from nearby communities participate in musical “duels” that fill the air with festive melodies. Music and dance are an essential part of the celebration, and attendees enjoy the company and merriment, accompanied by drinks and typical foods.
A Cultural Celebration
As the day progresses, the festivity includes a solemn mass in honor of the Señor del Socorro, where people give thanks for the good harvest of the previous year and pray for a prosperous agricultural cycle. After the mass, fireworks explode in the atrium of the temple, marking the beginning of a new round of musical “duels” in the plazuela.
Local vendors offer a variety of products, from religious souvenirs to culinary delights such as gorditas, enchiladas and the famous Salvatierra snow. This alternation of music, food and traditions continues into the night, culminating with a fireworks display that lights up the sky.
