Description:
A Journey to Tradition
The craft of making reed baskets is a trade that has been passed down from parents to children over the years, often learned “from the cradle.” From a young age, young people are introduced to this technique by their families, becoming guardians of a tradition that could be lost if not encouraged. Artisans in Comonfort use their skill to weave reed strips, creating everything from traditional utensils to more modern items that reflect their creativity.
The Creation Process
The creation of these pieces begins with collecting reeds from the field. Straight stalks are selected, as any curvature can make subsequent work difficult. Then, the reeds are cleaned of impurities and cut into pieces of various sizes, depending on the object to be made. To shape them properly, it is essential to soak them, ensuring they are tender and flexible.
A fascinating aspect of this process is how artisans manage to darken the reed by exposing it to embers, allowing them to play with different shades in their creations. From earrings and bracelets to baskets and fruit bowls, each piece reflects the uniqueness and creativity of its maker.
