An Ancestral Legacy

Ceremonial tortillas have their roots in the Otomí tradition, being a symbol of gratitude for the crops, daily bread and other blessings. These tortillas are made with creole corn, a fundamental ingredient that gives them their characteristic flavor. Their tortilla molding is only the first step in a process that has been passed down from generation to generation.

The Elaboration Process

The magic of the ceremonial tortillas lies in their decorations. To give them a special touch, wooden stamps, inherited over the years, are used to print designs representing nature, animals and religious symbols. These stamps are made from pine or cedar and are an essential part of the community's cultural identity.

To obtain the colorful inks that decorate the tortillas, the muicle plant is used. The branches and leaves of this plant are boiled together with lemon juice and baking soda to create natural inks in purple and red tones, which are then stamped on the tortillas. This process is not only artistic, but also reflects the community's connection to its natural environment.

An Event that Celebrates Culture

Every year, Comonfort celebrates the Ceremonial Tortilla Festival at the Doctor Mora Civic Plaza. This event is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in Otomi culture and enjoy the rich tradition of ceremonial tortillas. During the festival, you will be able to watch the creation of these tortillas live, taste different varieties and learn more about the importance of this practice in the community.

Where to Find Ceremonial Tortillas

In Comonfort, you can find these delicious tortillas at the town's traditional cooks, who are proud to keep this custom alive. In addition, many tours include the experience of making and tasting ceremonial tortillas, allowing you to connect even more with this beautiful tradition.
