The House of the Dogs: an architectural treasure in Apaseo el Grande, Guanajuato

Apaseo el Grande is one of the oldest municipalities in the state. Known in Purépecha as Apazueca, which means “Place of weasels”, this territory shelters among its streets one of the most important civil constructions of viceregal Mexico. The House of the Dogs, built in the XVIII century, is considered by specialists as the best civil work of its time in the country.

Built between 1780 and 1789 for Don Francisco Antonio Fernández de Herrera, this palace -also known as the Herrera Palace- stands out for its extraordinary Churrigueresque style. Its columns with lobed arches, the fine stone carvings made by the master craftsman Cornelio and the ornamental richness of its facades reveal the high artistic and technical level of the time. Inside, original elements are still preserved, such as the baroque-style wallpaper, which transport the visitor to a time of splendor and sophistication.

The name by which it is known today has its origin in one of its most emblematic details: the two sculptures of dogs that guard the main entrance, as silent guardians of this historical treasure. The building has two facades, niches in its corners and a heraldic element of great symbolism: the double-headed eagle of the House of Austria, which reinforces its stately character and historical relevance.
