This Legislative Palace (House of Representatives) was built in 1753 by Francisco Matías Busto y Moya on the grounds where the former ‘Palacio Marquesal de San Clemente’ used to be located but had since been demolished; formally becoming a public building in 1831.
In 1897 the building was demolished and re-built by request of Governor Manuel Gómez, the new building is the work of English architect Luis Long.
In 2017, it finally became a museum housing historic documents and a public library.

‘Plaza de la Paz’ square is within walking distance, here you will be able to spot a large basilica standing tall in bright yellow and red called ‘Basílica Colegiata de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato’. Inside you will find a shrine dedicated to the city’s patron saint ‘Virgen de Guanajuato’. The building is symbolic to people of faith; this was especially true for mine workers during the apogee of the industry in Guanajuato.
